The Best Time of Day to Photograph a Villa on the Costa del Sol

Ask any real estate photographer on the Costa del Sol what matters most, and it isn't the camera — it's the time on the clock when the shutter fires. Here's how we schedule shoots to make properties look their absolute best.

South-facing vs west-facing vs east-facing

Before we book a time, we check the orientation of the terrace and the main façade on Google Maps. The rule is simple: shoot when the sun is on the money shot, not behind it.

• South-facing villas: mid-morning or late afternoon avoid harsh overhead shadows.
• West-facing: shoot in the morning so the façade is lit but the sky behind it is deep blue, not blown out.
• East-facing: shoot in the afternoon for the same reason in reverse.

The magic 20 minutes: twilight (blue hour)

The single most important shot for any luxury villa is the twilight hero — that 20-minute window right after sunset when the sky turns deep cobalt and the interior lights glow warm. Miss it by ten minutes and the sky is either too bright or already black, which is why we plan the whole day around this window when a villa deserves it.

What about cloudy days?

We don't shoot on cloudy days on the Costa del Sol — grey skies kill exteriors, drone shots and pool water, and no amount of editing fully brings them back. If the forecast turns overcast, we'll usually suggest rescheduling. If a client is on a tight deadline and doesn't mind, we can still shoot and replace the sky with a clean blue one in post, but we don't split the shoot across two days.

What you can do before the photographer arrives

Timing is on us, but staging is on you. Before we arrive: open all blinds, turn every light on (including bathrooms), clear countertops completely, hide chargers and remotes, tuck the pool hose out of frame, and if you have pets, a quick sweep for hair pays off.
